This is a collaboration we call Satie’ with Friends. This entry is based on Gymnope’dies number 1.

Lent Et Douloureux
Slow and Painful
ゆっくりと痛みを伴って
Yukkuri to itami wo tomonatte

French, to English, to Japanese

In Jacksonville, Florida I recorded a backing piece by playing bass and impossible pianos. Impossible pianos are patches that I create that cannot exist in the real world, they are layers of 12-meter grand pianos and Fender Rhodes samples bounced off the Grand Canyon and filtered through the Martian atmosphere with additional synthesizer effects.

For this piece I sent a mix of my backing track to my friend Kyuppa, 今野英生 , who lives in Kushiro, Hokkaido. He is an amazing musician. He is a musical god in my humble opinion. Go to his site and listen to his interpretations of Modest Mussorgsky. In addition, he created this amazing video set to his Pictures at an Exhibition, in Microsoft Power Point of all mediums! Watch it!

I told Kyuppa to use any instrument(s). Follow the melody, or do not. I want this to express your interpretation of the Lent Et Douloureux. Use any instruments and techniques to record the melody however you choose to interpret it and send me the files.

Kyuppa plays many instruments and is an amazing musician. He also makes instruments from found materials like baseball bat violins, music stand flutes, and a host of others. I had no idea what he would send back. Kyuppa writes the following about his contribution, I included the English translation and his original kanji.

I have never to recording with over sea. But music is common language for all. Howie made me realize it.

I play flute and clarinet and violin at this track. Two woodwind for make melody alternatively. The Violin tone make ambient noise. I play dissonance to gain harmonics of bass.

I hope you enjoy it!

I know I enjoyed it, he achieved greatness. He sent me three audio tracks with flute, clarinet and violin. I have mixed our efforts into this piece of music. This is a collaboration between two friends who met through a common love of interpreting the music of Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky.

I present our version of Lent et Douloureux, Slow and Painful. ゆっくりと痛みを伴って, Yukkuri to Itami wo Tomonatte. This is our friendly interpretation of the masterwork by Eric Satie.
