We call it the Real Jam because we only do songs in the Real Book, the bible of American music. The Real Jam is currently held on the first Sunday of the month. The next jam downbeat is @4:30 on Sunday, May 3rd. I will arrive at the hall around 3:45 to begin preparations and get set up, hope to hear you there!
The hall is located at 2030 Schumacher Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207. If you are coming from downtown on Beach Boulevard, Schumacher is right after Mudville Grill, House of Stereo and across from the former burned down Hamburger Mary’s. See Map
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Howard Arner. You can reach me via the email at the top of the page, by text or just call me.
This jam is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. You do not have to be a union member to attend. We welcome all skill levels and just want to have a good time playing the standards and learning from each other.
The Songs
The following songs are on the menu for the jam inclined. Note that you can get these songs in iReal format and also charts are available for download from the web. A little Charlie Birdie told me that if you search “internet archive real book” you can see and download these charts on the interwebs. I know nothing of this….
Also, check Musescore, most times you can get these for free from there.
This link is a PDF file of all the songs with guitar chord diagrams. I do not attest to the validity, as I am a keyboard player but it was generated by iReal. I am going to add another link for the iReal PDF of charts with just chord names, this is the placeholder to remind me to do that, hint hint.
This link is a page that contains an iReal Pro setlist of the songs. I update this link when I add songs to the list. If you do not own iReal Pro, you should. I have 4,303 charts in my iReal program right now. It is money well spent and I find it an invaluable tool and also practice assistant!
In the list of links below this paragraph are all of the songs currently in rotation. In each song’s link, I have included information about the creation of the song, an image of an iReal chart in the key we will be performing the song, a link to a practice video/backing track, lyrics if appropriate, and a video example or two of each song. Each of the links below will take you to the page for that song. Each page has a link at the bottom to bring you back here.
Remember, this jam is about having fun, interacting with other musicians and getting better at comping and improvisation. It is a no judgement zone all about creating music in a live environment. I hope to hear you at the next jam!
